Not all individual immigrants and not all immigrant groups. But someone with a different set of attitudes and behavior may rise dramatically in the same society.
Anyone familiar with their very different histories over many centuries should not be surprised. This constant state of victimhood, with the correlating idea that victims MUST be believed until proven wrong, is weakening not only the individual but the country as a whole. Indian and Chinese immigrants benefitted from wartime alliances.
They may have a point in such things as music, art, and literature from different cultures, but there are many human purposes common to peoples of all cultures. Nothing has been more common than for particular groups-- often a minority-- to dominate particular occupations or industries.
The point of all this is that there is no such thing as immigrants in general, whether in Europe or America. White farm owners and other large-scale employers used Asian immigrants to discourage union organising among white workers, and hired Asian workers along with Mexican and Puerto Rican workers from different nations to discourage solidarity: We need only recognize that particular products, skills, technologies, agricultural crops, or intellectual concepts accomplish particular purposes better than their alternatives.
They, unlike other ethnic minorities, succeeded while remaining hidden and unobtrusive in American social life. What attitudes and behaviors have the white liberal intellectuals been cheering on.
Both in the present and in the past, some immigrant groups have made great contributions to American society, and others have contributed mainly to the welfare rolls and the prisons.
If you want to see Japan of the Taisho era, go to Brazil. Here there is especially strong resistance to accepting the reality of different levels and kinds of skills, interests, habits, and orientations among different groups of people.
It is an alibi, an excuse. Most of the media publicize what is happening to the statistical brackets -- especially that "top one percent" -- rather than what is happening to individual people. Nor is the word merely a description of the long-known fact that the American population is made up of people from many countries, many races, and many cultural backgrounds.
Yet their social histories in the United States have been very different. Some people like to refer to the past as "earlier and simpler times. The first takes no notice of race; the second takes race into account, but only based on accurate information.
Those who use the term "cultural diversity" to promote a multiplicity of segregated ethnic enclaves are doing an enormous harm to the people in those enclaves.
This action by white liberals is, according to Sowell, a social poison that must be counteracted sooner, rather than later. All that was well known long before the word "diversity" became an insistent part of our vocabulary, an invocation, an imperative, or a bludgeon in ideological conflicts.
When Scottish highlanders, for example, immigrated to North Carolina in colonial times, they had a very different history from that of Scottish lowlanders who settled in North Carolina. One example of this he gives is that progressives widely see criminal background checks for employment as racist.
But if you know something about the history of those Japanese who settled in these two countries, you know that they were culturally different in Japan, before they ever got on the boats to take them across the Pacific Ocean-- and they were still different decades later.
I suppose it could be because the Korean American anti-colonial movement concerns the interactions of Japanese Americans and Korean Americans but still. But the reason is that Europe's coastline is far more convoluted, with many harbors and inlets being formed all around the continent.
Yet over time, they overcame extreme poverty, lack of literacy and high crime rates to wholly normalize as part of American society. Sowell does not consider conspiracy theory, which I've run out of space to introduce and no, not the kind you have to agree with for fear of losing your job.
These Japanese, incidentally, own approximately three-quarters as much land in Brazil than in Japan. They would pit Japanese crews against Korean or Chinese crews, playing on traditional animosities to encourage competition in worker output.
Neither attitude or belief is productive or conducive to breaking out of the cultural mindset Sowell has been writing about. It might be possible to believe that these Jewish immigrants just happened to be in the right place at the right time if you restricted yourself to their history in the United States.
What is this, 'Oh thank you kind colonial masters for teaching us the arts of love' tone. They sure as hell are not helping our country. Nor is this situation unique to the United States.
